    4th of July: Summer Entertaining

    Champagne cocktails | seefoodplay.comHappy 4th of July, y’all!

You guys, I have been so excited about today’s post because I love love (love) American holidays and all that goes with them! Living outside of the States for the past 10 years, Independence day and Thanksgiving have been my two days every year to celebrate all things American. Nationality and identity are complex, but no matter how long I’ve lived abroad, I always feel very American. Speaking of very American: can we please just take a moment to enjoy this red-white-and-blue bouquet of flowers that I found at my local grocery store!? Talk about patriotic flowers!!

Today’s post is a round-up of some of my favorite things that might help you celebrate the July 4th holiday, followed by two of my absolute all-time favorite Summer entertaining recipes: homemade BBQ sauce, and cranberry & raspberry champagne cocktails.

This weekend is triple exciting for me as my in-laws are in town visiting from Paris for the first time since we moved to London, and one of my good friends is also in town with her beau. Family + friends + Independence Day = BBQ party!

I knew I wanted to post a summer entertaining + July 4th recipe, but couldn’t decide on the recipe to choose because there are just so many great ones (potato salad, baked beans, BBQ beef ribs, coleslaw, some kind of summery drinks…). So, I ended up choosing two recipes 🙂

I am also super excited to announced that I have teamed up with a few other bloggers to share even more fabulous summer entertaining ideas with you. So please check out their posts for more summer-inspired recipe ideas!

As for me, keep reading for not one but two recipes: both super simple and great for summer entertaining!

It’s pretty impossible to select just one recipe to post, but my main priority was to keep it simple. Sometimes I start writing recipes and realize, about 18 ingredients in and 26 steps later, that ain’t nobody got time for that! Summer entertaining is really about taking it easy, kicking back and enjoying life with friends and family… not spending hours slaving in the kitchen on elaborate recipes.

And that’s exactly what I did this July 4th: enjoyed our terrace for the first time this year with actual sunshine, with Hubby, his parents, and one of my best friends and her cheri. Absolute perfection.

If you’re curious, this is what I served at our 4th of July BBQ:

    • Grilled chicken w/homemade BBQ sauce
    • Grilled corn on the cob
    • Oven-roasted asparagus
    • Mac n cheese
    • Decomposed Greek salad (fancy way of saying: each ingredient was served in separate bowls, to accommodate picky eaters…Jonathan).
    • Dessert: Greek yogurt & raspberry parfaits

So, on to the good stuff: the first recipe is for my homemade BBQ sauce. It’s so easy and it scores pretty high on my OMGTHISISAMAZING-ometer! I couldn’t stop dipping veggies into the sauce to taste it, and literally couldn’t even wait long enough to take decent pictures before slathering it on the chicken. This stuff is the bomb diggity and is heaps better than anything store-bought. Trust me.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 1/2 cup ketchup
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke

Instructions: combine all ingredients in a small saucepan, cooking on medium heat for about 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Slather on your favorite meat and grill (or bake) your little heart out!

The second recipe is actually a cocktail, and is one of my favorites because they can be made in advance. A practical and semi-fancy party drink for a crowd, that can be made in advance…. um, yes, please!

These cranbery & raspberry champagne cocktails bring just enough fancy to your summer entertaining menu, without being too much of a hassle to prepare. These are great if you don’t want to go the classic punch bowl route, but also don’t want to be stuck whipping up cocktails for your guests all day. Because again, nobody has time for that!

I’ve been creeping these vintage glass bottles for a while on Amazon, and recently decided to just go ahead and order them, and I’m so glad that I did! They’re adorbs, and perfect for these make-ahead cocktails because they come with lids!!!! I got the 200ml bottles, but you can get any size you want. Ikea also sells a similar product, which is a bit bigger (though no lids).

Cranberry & raspberry (fancy pants) champagne cocktails

    Ingredients (per cocktail):

    • 3-4 raspberries
    • 100ml of Cranberry juice
    • 75ml of Champagne (or any sparkling wine)
    • 1 tablespoon simple syrup

    Instructions:

    1. Add your raspberries to your bottles (or glasses if you prefer and will serve right away)
    2. Then add the following in this order: simple syrup, cranberry juice and champagne
    3. Tightly close the lids, and store in the fridge until ready to serve (to get maximum fizz from the champaign, you should serve within the next 4-5 hours).

I decorated my little bottles of champaign cocktails with little twine bows, and served with straws. This is the only recipe where drinking champagne from a straw is allowed 😉

  • A taste of London: Brick Lane

A taste of London: Brick Lane

A taste of London: Brick Lane (Dark Sugars chocolate shop) | seefoodplay.comThank goodness for Jonathan, otherwise I’d probably spend way too much all of my time indoors working on my various projects. When I’m not at work, these past few months I’ve either been in the kitchen cooking up new recipes or researching/working on a new DIY idea that I’ve been dreaming of all week, but didn’t have time for. Basically, I’ve been a homebody since we moved to London. In Paris, we had our little hangouts or neighborhoods that we’d go to for drinks, we had football games to go to, friends to meet-up with. Everything is new to us, here, though, so we are still working out our new hangouts and favorite ‘hoods.

Besides, we have been living in London for the past few months, but haven’t really been taking advantage of our new city because A) we’ve been busy moving and B) the weather hasn’t exactly been cooperating (read: it has been downright cold almost every day since we’ve moved…!).

This weekend, though, there was no excuse because I didn’t have any projects planned and the weather was awesome! I was in a bit of a funk and kind of just hanging out in PJ’s with no energy or motivation to do much, when J pulled out our London guide book and said “we are getting out of the house!”

And he was so right to insist because we had a very London Saturday afternoon: strolling around Brick lane, stopping into a cute little chocolate shop, then having drinks before watching the Champion’s League game. I was so inspired by all of the vibrant sights and smells, that as soon as I got home I went back into Kitchen Experiment mode and cooked up a fabulous no bake, no yeast skillet pizza (which I’ll be posting soon)! Sometimes, getting out and doing something different or even so simple as just walking around a new neighborhood can lead to so much inspiration!

So, in honor of Jonathan’s love of chocolate (seriously, that man loves his chocolate) today’s photos are from our stop into the Dark Sugars chocolate shop (address below). Bonus: they have lots of vegan options!

Enjoy trying not to lick the screen 😉

  • Weekly meal planning

    Weekly meal planning

    Weekly meal planning| seefoodplay.com

Working a 9-5 (more like 8-8 in reality, by the time you count the commute) and getting a homemade + healthy + fast meal on the dinner table every night can be quite the challenge.

Our routine is usually as follows: do a grocery shop once a week and pick up random things that I think I might want to eat, then do several smaller shops to pick up specific ingredients to make dinner with, once I’ve decided what to actually cook. For two people, our monthly grocery bill has been unnecessarily high (easily over €700). Granted, we allocate a decent-sized portion of our budget to food because…well, we love to eat good food! We don’t skimp on high-end ingredients like organic meats, seafood and veggies, and we don’t always buy based on what’s on sale. What happens way too often, though, is that we ended up wasting food (which is horrible) and not eating as diverse meals throughout the week as we should. Since my shopping isn’t always targeted based on actual meals, I end up with too many ingredients that I can’t use that end up going bad. Of course, when we’re not sure what to make for dinner, way-too-often we opt for an easy pasta dish. I would eat pasta for every meal if I could (really…) but Hubby’s metabolism doesn’t process it the same way mine does, so alternatives need to be served up on a regular basis.

To battle the weekly dinner problems described above, I’ve implemented a 3-part strategy to eat better (for less money), waste less food and generally be more organized with our meal management.

    So, the plan is:

    –          Online grocery shopping

    –          Strict(ish) budget of £400/month

    –          Weekly meal planning

Online grocery shopping solves the problem of just randomly throwing things in the shopping cart, then getting to the checkout with  tons of groceries but nothing to really make into actual meals. Our flat is a 3rd floor walk-up, so it’s also a pretty big convenience to not have to lug everything up the stairs! We shop at Waitrose (one day I’ll write about the Tesco grocery delivery fiasco) and we love it. The food is fresh and deliveries arrive on-time, which is key for busy folks like us. Most online grocery stores have a shopping list feature, so you can essentially build your list over the course of a few days, then order once you’ve gotten everything you’ll need for the week. Shopping online makes price comparison significantly easier, because you can just sort by price and make smarter choices. The price per item or per kilo is often provided as well, so you can really make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck this way. If you have the online shopping option available to you, then give it a try!

Sticking to a budget: We are big believers in only putting quality products into our bodies, and are very thankful to be able to afford organic foods and the like.  That doesn’t mean, though, that we can’t eat just as well for less money! We just need to pay attention to what we’re buying and stick to a budget. Again, online shopping comes in handy because I can very easily keep track of exactly how much I’m spending and I can cut down on mid-week shopping trips – I always end up buying things I don’t need when I’m at the grocery store! So, I’ve reigned in our budget to no more than £400/month. So, that works out to £75-100/week, plus a little leftover for a mid-week shop if we do run out of something.

Online shopping and budgets are key, but the real revolution for us has been meal planning. I’ve dabbled in make-ahead breakfasts and freezer meals, but I’ve never actually committed to a full-on weekly meal plan. It just seemed so daunting: spending hours thinking of recipes, making sure to have all the ingredients on-hand, then a full day of preparing everything ahead of time. Who has time for that…? Well, it turns out – I do!

Saturday morning I spent around 2 hours working out recipes. This takes a while because: my husband is somewhat picky, I wanted to choose recipes that allow me to use similar ingredients without making similar recipes, I was sticking to a budget, and I wanted easy recipes that could be semi-prepped in advance. Once all of my meals were planned out, I made a grocery list and did my online shopping to be delivered on Sunday. So ::drumroll: here’s the menu for our first week of meal planning:

    • Monday: Homemade shake-n-bake chicken
    • Tuesday: Paris-style roast chicken
    • Wednesday: Beef & Broccoli stir fry
    • Thursday: Jonathan’s spaghetti bolognese
    • Friday: Greek chicken salad

Once my groceries arrived, I brined the chicken, made the shake-n-bake mix, marinated the beef for the stir-fry, marinated the chicken for the salad (the put it in the freezer). I didn’t pre-chop any veggies because I still prefer to make those fresh. All of this took under an hour, which was pretty surprising as I thought it’d take way longer. It was so fast, that I had time to work on my Ikea Bekvam stool makeover (coming soon!) before it got too late 😉

For the moment, I’m only doing the meal-planning for dinner but I’ll be updating it for all meals soon – so keep an eye out for that!

Since I have a husband that’s less-than-thrilled when it’s his turn to make dinner, this also erases the stress he might feel when I text to say that I’ll be home late…please make dinner! Whenever I know I’ll have a late night at work, we plan ahead by picking out a man-friendly recipe that Jonathan feels comfortable making. The main ingredients are usually already prepped, so on “his nights” he usually just needs to pop his recipe in the oven and I come home to a delicious-smelling apartment!

What are your tips for getting healthy meals on your dinner table every night without going crazy? I’d love to hear them, as our strategy is constantly evolving!

    seefoodplay.com | Blog Launch image

Hello and welcome to my little corner of the web, seeFoodplay.com!

Thanks for stopping by – keep reading to find out why I started this blog, what I plan to publish in terms of content and a few details about me.

So the first thing that people tend to ask me about is the name of the blog, where it comes from and what it means. A few months into working on the blog, I was brainstorming names but couldn’t find anything that matched what I was going for. I got chatting with my colleague Paddy, and halfway jokingly asked him to come up with a name for my blog that would be the perfect mix of what I wanted it all to be about: food (lots of food!), travel, DIY & crafts, all while incorporating my French influence from having lived in Paris for the past 10 years. A few days later, he came up with “seefoodplay” and I loved it pretty much right away! It might not make much sense at first sight, but it combines everything I was looking for, in a cute little French wordplay. When said aloud, “SeeFoodPlay” sounds like “s’il vous plait” which means “please” in French. But it can also mean “Listen up – your attention please!” and it’s even sometimes used in a restaurant when the waiter arrives at your table with your meal. As in, s’il vous plait… if it pleases you to enjoy this amazing French meal that I’ve just served you. The more I thought about the name, the more I realized that it was perfect: this blog is my platform, albeit a small one, to get your attention and to share some of my favorite recipes… if it pleases you 🙂

The see is mostly related to my travels as I go out and see the world with my loving sidekick and devoted husband, Jonathan. The food is dedicated to my (growing) recipe collection, and the play is a reference to my DIY & crafting projects.

As for me, I’m a 30-something originally from Michigan, USA, living and working in London as of February 2015! I spent the previous 10 years in Paris, though, and the city of light definitely still holds a big piece of my heart. But I left with something of hers, too: my adorable Parisian husband, Jonathan. I’m thankful that he continues to put up with the messy kitchens I’ve generated over the years, and supports me in all of my sometimes-crazy always-messy project & recipe ideas.

I fell in love with Europe after my post-High School graduation trip to London and Paris in 2002, and it was pretty clear that my place was on this side of the Atlantic. A study abroad in 2004 in Paris was followed by a permanent move in 2006. After almost ten years in the city of lights (and love), it was time to experience something else: London! After lots of thinking, planning (and more over-thinking), I decided to take advantage of a work opportunity to see what life is like on the other side of The Channel. So, a new adventure begins in London but my heart and home will always be in Paris! These past ten years have allowed me to see and do more than I could have ever hoped for, and I’m really looking forward to this new chapter in my life. From starting my career, to buying an apartment, and most-recently to finding (and marrying!) my one true love (J), I can only say that my 20’s are going to be hard to beat!

So thanks for stopping by to read what I’ve got to say! I’ll be posting about the things I love: food, wine, traveling, cooking, a little bit of fashion, entertaining, home decorating and DIY projects. My “blog research” suggests that this falls into the category of the “Lifestyle blog” but it seems a bit pretentious to suggest that anyone should take lifestyle advice from me…. So, let’s just say this blog is about a bunch of stuff that I like (Food, Travels, DIY…) that hopefully you’ll like, too!

I am committed to updating this blog regularly, and will also answer all questions and emails sent my way! I try to make my posts as clear and typo-free as possible, so if you notice any mistakes, please let me know, but you can also drop me a line just to say “hello!” 🙂
