    My birthday…and chocolate cake

    birthday chocolate cake | seefoodplay.com

This Saturday was my (31st….) birthday, and it was fabutastic. Yes, new word, that’s just how awesome it was. I had a few annoyances throughout and somehow managed to actually cry at one point, but all in all, it was one of my best birthdays yet! All of the credit goes to my husband, though, and he really hit a home run this year. Thanks to him, I have a few new London travel tips for you to check out — well worth it! Also — keep reading for another amazingly easy cake recipe!

Jonathan planned out my day, from start to finish, and I am still impressed by how perfect everything turned out to be. My Type-A self had a hard time not knowing what we were going to be doing at all times, but I quickly let go and am so glad I did.

When Jonathan said we had to be up and out of the flat by 6.30am I thought he was joking (again, this was Saturday…), but when we were up and out by 6.45 (getting out of the house always takes us ages) I knew he meant business with the “Day of Birthday Surprises” 🙂

Our first stop was for breakfast at E Pellicci, a tiny little hole-in-the-wall cafe serving up full English breakfasts (including a vegetarian option). Their cappuccino’s were everything you might possibly need that early on a Saturday morning, and the food was delish. Okay, Jonathan…. I see you.

Next we popped down to Oxford street to wander around a bit and to do some shopping. London is pretty awesome first thing in the morning, before all the tourists are milling about; there’s something really special about a big city like London with no cars or people around. When we travel, we try to make it a point to get up before the sun comes up to go out and explore: it’s a magical sleepy point in the day when everything is just a little bit more beautiful — I highly recommend giving it a try! So I guess we were tourists in London for the morning 🙂

After our Big Adventure visiting London, we headed back East to get some real shopping in: I needed new shoes (I’m using the term “need” quite loosely, here), so off to the mall to pick those out we went. I ended up getting an amaaaazing pair of Nine West black pumps for 75% off (um, hello? I’ll take that deal any day), so that alone made my day a sucess. But it wasn’t over yet…!

We had just enough time to come home to change and get ready for our night on the town, and this is where things got even more special.

Jonathan must have spent countless hours researching (and apparently my love of Tripadvisor rubbed off on him) until he found the perfect spot for dinner: The Sixtyone. Our food was exquisite, from the beginning to the end! We both love our grub, so I don’t take it lightly to say that this is one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant in a long time. We got fish and lamb, and both were cooked to perfection, and even our cocktails were out-of-this-world amazing. Check out the addresses below!

Now onto that cake recipe I promised you. Okay so first of all, I need to confess: I originally wanted to take a bunch of photos during the day to add them to this post, but as usual, I’m terrible at snapping shots so only had one sad little photo of my Birthday Dessert graciously offered to me by the Sixtyone staff:

Then I started thinking — I should post a picture of my own cake that I’ve baked (because I’m so good at baking…). I’ve been playing around a bit with my Easiest Chocolate cake recipe for a while, trying different variations, mostly for when I’m in the mood for something fluffier. You guys… trust me when I tell you: this cakey cake recipe is so easy, so fast, and so perfect for a birthday cake celebration for two…! It came out so good I couldn’t believe that I made it, totally from scratch, in less than 30 minutes all together.

Baking isn’t easy for me, so I need my recipes to be fool-proof (times ten). Given that, I’ve kept the quantities as uniform as possible — nothing is worse than when a recipe calls for 1.5 cups of this, 3/4 cups of that, 2 tbps of another thing, sprinkled with 1.5 tsps of that one ingredient you already forgot you needed…! So, here’s my take on the classic chocolate cake — whether you’re a super-star when it comes to baking, or (like me) need to keep it simple — this recipe will not let you down.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 egg
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1/2 cup oil
    • 1/2 cup cocoa
    • 1/2 heaping cup flour
    • 1/2 heaping cup sugar
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder

    Instructions:

    1. Combine the egg, sugar, milk, and oil whisking for about 1 minute
    2. Next, whisk in the flour, sugar, baking powder and cocoa powder
    3. Whisk for another minute or two until everything is nice and smooth
    4. Pour your mixture into a small buttered baking pan (this fills two 5 inch spring form pans, which are what I use)
    5. Bake on 190degrees (celsius) for about 20-25 minutes
    6. Once cooled, finish it off with your favorite icing, and enjoy your teensy weensy perfect-for-couples birthday cake!

*Note: this cake mix fills two of my pans, but would also work quite well in cupcake tins – I think it would fill about 5 cupcake molds.

**Note: I had two molds, so I made the cutest little two-layer cake ever, but you could just serve this as a single layer cake for one person, too!

  • A taste of London: Brick Lane

A taste of London: Brick Lane

A taste of London: Brick Lane (Dark Sugars chocolate shop) | seefoodplay.comThank goodness for Jonathan, otherwise I’d probably spend way too much all of my time indoors working on my various projects. When I’m not at work, these past few months I’ve either been in the kitchen cooking up new recipes or researching/working on a new DIY idea that I’ve been dreaming of all week, but didn’t have time for. Basically, I’ve been a homebody since we moved to London. In Paris, we had our little hangouts or neighborhoods that we’d go to for drinks, we had football games to go to, friends to meet-up with. Everything is new to us, here, though, so we are still working out our new hangouts and favorite ‘hoods.

Besides, we have been living in London for the past few months, but haven’t really been taking advantage of our new city because A) we’ve been busy moving and B) the weather hasn’t exactly been cooperating (read: it has been downright cold almost every day since we’ve moved…!).

This weekend, though, there was no excuse because I didn’t have any projects planned and the weather was awesome! I was in a bit of a funk and kind of just hanging out in PJ’s with no energy or motivation to do much, when J pulled out our London guide book and said “we are getting out of the house!”

And he was so right to insist because we had a very London Saturday afternoon: strolling around Brick lane, stopping into a cute little chocolate shop, then having drinks before watching the Champion’s League game. I was so inspired by all of the vibrant sights and smells, that as soon as I got home I went back into Kitchen Experiment mode and cooked up a fabulous no bake, no yeast skillet pizza (which I’ll be posting soon)! Sometimes, getting out and doing something different or even so simple as just walking around a new neighborhood can lead to so much inspiration!

So, in honor of Jonathan’s love of chocolate (seriously, that man loves his chocolate) today’s photos are from our stop into the Dark Sugars chocolate shop (address below). Bonus: they have lots of vegan options!

Enjoy trying not to lick the screen 😉

  • 10 Awesome Paris Restaurants

    10 Awesome Paris Restaurants

    10 awesome Paris restaurants | seefoodplay.com

I know it’s sooo clichĂ© but I remember like it was yesterday the day I decided to go on my first trip to Europe. I was sitting in French class at the end of Senior Year of High School, and my best friend said “We should go to Paris after we graduate!” I more or less went along with it, thinking it would be one of those things we talked about but never actually ended up doing. I totally under-estimated her, though, because she went off and found us plane tickets a few weeks later! I had, after all, said I would go. I couldn’t back out at this point, and I was glad I couldn’t because this trip clearly changed the course of my life.

After a few months of working a summer job to pay for the trip and learning a few more extra phrases in French, we stuffed our backpacks to capacity and set off on our Big European Adventure. It was amazing (of course – it’s Paris!) and this trip ultimately planted the seed which would later become a full-blown desire to move to the City of Lights. So now, almost 15 years later
I’d like to share some of my favorite restaurants that I’ve come to love over the 10 years I lived there. Besides, it’s only fitting that my first travel post be about Paris!

One of the most challenging things when planning a trip to Paris is deciding where to eat! There are so many choices in so many different neighborhoods that it can be quite overwhelming. Jonathan and I both agree, though, that you can’t really just pop into random restaurants hoping for an amazing meal. There are sooo many restaurants in Paris, but not all of them are amazing.

My #1 tip is definitely to check Tripadvisor. Of course you can’t plan your meals 100% around “Top 10 Restaurants in Paris” lists because you miss out on some really great ones, off the beaten path or just not very well known. Though, you do want to try to make your restaurant experiences as memorable as possible, so here are a few that I recommend to friends visiting Paris, to the guests staying in my Airbnb Rental, and now to you! I always get great feedback, so these should be solid choices.  Have you ever been to Paris and had an amazing restaurant experience? If so, then I’d love to hear about it in the comments section!

In no particular order, here we go for a few of my favorite places to eat in Paris:

    Camelia (inside Mandarin Oriental)
This restaurant is very, very nice! It’s not cheap, but if you have a special occasion to celebrate or just want to have a fancy dinner, then this place is a great option. Even better in the summer as you can dine in their lush private garden! I ate here one day totally unplanned and was so impressed that this has become one of my favorite spots.

    Les Ombres
For an amazing (maybe one of the best?) views from a restaurant in Paris — definitely come here. The food is pricey as you’d expect, but I really enjoy this place. Check out lafourchette.com for discounts as there are often specials. I’ve had many things on the menu and have not once been disappointed. This place isn’t amazingly charming (it’s not awful, just not ohmygoodnessthisisthecutestplaceever) and the staff are not particularly friendly… but the view is crazy!

    La Cave Gourmande
I send all of my out-of-town guests here. The food is classic French, right in the heart of Montmartre, the food is delicious, the service perfect, and the prices are very reasonable. Local perfection if you’ll be in the 18th arrondissement & Montmartre area! This place has a definite local feel to it, and would be the perfect place for lunch if you’re exploring the area. They’re also open somewhat late, which is rare in Paris.

    Kong
This place is pretty chic and fashionable, and great for drinks, dinner, dancing
or all three! Not cheap, but a good all-in-one place if you want to go for dinner & dancing. It’s located on the top floor of a historic Parisian building, try for a table with a view! Reservations highly recommended for dinner. Don’t be put off by the hostess that may or may not be very friendly…

    Mama Shelter
This is both a restaurant and a pizza place. It’s a very cool hotel with a big bar, and the bar serves food too. I love everything about this place (except for the sometimes snarky service
)! Excellent for drinks or dinner. Very chic/urban atmosphere. Valet parking available. This place is awesome! Their food is delish, and it’s worth going off the typical tourist path to get  there (they’re not far from Pere Lachaise Cemetery).

    Pub Saint Germain
This is one of my go-to spots for both food & drinks. They’re open all night long, and serve food until the wee hours of the night. Their burgers are fantastic, as is their Asian platter. Drinks are half-price during happy hour, and this is a great spot for people watching. It’s in the trendy Saint Germain neighborhood, and I highly recommend it if you’re out and about in that area.

    Le Christine
Cute & cosy little restaurant in the center of Paris; not the cheapest, but they offer a pretty good tasting menu! This place is actually great for tourists because you get a pretty amazing culinary experience in a charming little restaurant, in a lovely neighborhood. There are often deals online, so definitely check that out.

    La Bouteille d’Or
Good French food at reasonable prices, and a view of Notre Dame. There will be other tourists, but don’t let that scare you; the food is good, and won’t break the bank. The one thing that stood out when I went was the service: they treated us like royalty! It’s a bit too brightly-lit to really be considered cozy or romantic, but for a lunch spot this place is perfect.

    Chez Robert et Louise
This place is a cute little “typical” French restaurant that specializes in different cuts of beef. I found that for this neighborhood, the price was pretty decent. Their food is delicious and the place is very charming but the best part: the food is cooked over an open fire! I discovered this place one day when I was wandering around the Marais with Hubby, and I’m glad I did.

    Grazie
For a great pizza experience, fresh ingredients and a lengthy wine menu, this place is one of your best bets in Paris. Good for a couple’s night out, or for a group of friends! Delicious pizzas in a young/hip/urban atmosphere. Reservations are best, to avoid disappointment.
