    Restaurant review: Picture (London)

Restaurant review of Picture - London | seefoodplay.com

A couple of months ago I made an online restaurant reservation using Opentable and although the reservation was fine, I immediately regretted giving them my main email address because I was getting multiple emails daily advertising new restaurants, deals, and special promotions. Right when I was about to click the “unsubscribe” link, one of the restaurants on the mailing caught my eye… probably because it started with “free cocktail…” so I took the bait and clicked. After all, I’m always down to try out a new restaurant especially since we are still getting our bearings in London.

The Tripadvisor reviews looked promising, and the deal seemed pretty good at £35/person for a six course meal (not to mention the free cocktail 😉), so I went for it. Spam email marketing for the win!

After a 35-minute Uber ride across town, and despite the fact though we arrived 10 minutes late, the hostess was friendly and welcoming as she led us to the perfect little table in the back corner of the room.

The dining area is quite small and the tables are relatively close together, but we were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere, which was comfortably cosy, not too loud (which seems rare in London restaurants…) and was perfect for a casual yet romantic dinner.

I should point out that I usually stay as far away as possible from “tasting” menus because I’m really not an adventurer when it comes to food, and there are a few things that we don’t eat at all, no exceptions (like pork). But we threw caution to the wind and settled in for Picture’s tasting menu.

    The courses were as follows:

    1. Winter vegetable velouté
    2. Roast butternut squash, aubergine, quinoa, yogurt
    3. Caramelized onion ravioli (substitution)
    4. Grilled sea bream, cauliflower, olive, capers
    5. 28 day agend beef, sweet potato, salsify and curly kale
    6. Chocolate mousse, poire williams, milk jam and amaranth popcorn
+cheese plate for me (because desserts ain’t really my thing)

Once we were seated, our waitress promptly brought over the free cocktails that got us in the door to begin with. It was an elderflower bellini (I think!) and it was absolutely perfect. I would have ordered a second one, if we hadn’t already pre-gamed at home with Jonathan’s famous margaritas, followed by a round of Ti punch. Hey, it was Saturday night… don’t judge.

When the velouté came out I knew we were in good hands at Picture: it was flavorful and rich, with a roasted garlic and nutty flavor which immediately set the tone for the meal, and tasted exactly as an autumn soup should.

The next courses were brought out in just the right pace by the extremely attentive wait staff. The roast butternut squash followed the velouté and it was pretty good, though probably my least favorite of the six courses. The yogurt sauce was divine though and gave it a much-needed flavor boost, so we both cleaned our plates.

With the next course, though, things got real. The only substitution we made was for the smoked pork, and we were glad we did! The substitution was homemade ravioli with caremlized onions and it was easily my favorite part of the meal. As soon as I took the first bite, I knew this was going to be the highlight of my night for me. Caramelized onions are often nauseating after only a few bites, but these were perfectly balanced and added just enough flavor, without totally taking over the dish. That sauce, though, was the real highlight. It was creamy and flavorful, perfectly accompanying each forkful of the light and fluffy ravioli.

The sea bream was perfect as well: perfectly cooked, served with the right amount of sauce and veggies. This course was very, very nice but not mind-blowingly incredible. I think the bar was just too high after that ravioli…! Top marks for presentation, though, which was gorgeous!

The last savory course was the 28 day aged beef (bavette) and here’s where things get tricky. First of all, I reallllly don’t like bavette because it’s often tough and doesn’t have that buttery texture of ribeye or filet. Jonathan, however, loves bavette. When this course arrived I thought this would be without a doubt our favorite course: the meat was perfectly rare served with sides that I love. And I did love it – it was tender and the flavors all came together nicely, which was the perfect way to round out the meal. Jonathan, on the other hand *hated* it! He didn’t like the texture, didn’t like the flavor and was all around pretty disappointed. I can only think it was because the beef did have a particular flavor (not sure if it was the meat itself or from the grill) but that’s exactly what I liked about it.

The last course was the dessert (or cheese plate for me) and it was fab– chocolate mouse, which was not-too-rich but nice and creamy, and the cheese board was just the right quantity and the three cheeses were lovely. The only complaint would be the crackers: neither of us liked them, and a piece of bread would have really been much nicer.

Both of us enjoyed a nice glass of wine with our meals: Jonathan went with a Montepulciano but I went with a Sancerre. Needless to say, I had wine-envy (like I do every time I go for a white instead of a red…) but both were fine.

So for around £100 total for two people, we had two welcome cocktails, two six course tasting menus, two glasses of wine and an extra cheese plate. All in all, it was a great deal. The food was beautifully put together and it felt like a dining experience as opposed to just a regular night out to eat. The atmosphere at Picture feels cosy and just a little bit fancy, without feeling pretentious or snooty. While this would be a great choice for a slightly-casual romantic evening out, I wouldn’t necessarily go here for a romantic special occasion (like an anniversary) as the tables are probably a little too close together for that. The other diners weren’t really dressed up, so it didn’t have that “celebration” feel to it. If you’re looking for a more understated dining experience with a an impressive and fancy meal, however, then this is your place!

The waitstaff were absolutely perfect, too: they were unobtrusive yet always seemed to swoop in and out with great timing for each course, were multilingual (Jonathan got to practice his French 😊) and gave great recommendations for the wine.

All in all, Jonathan and I both agreed that we loved Picture and thought each course was seasonal, innovative and well-balanced. The quantities were perfect, which tasting menus often struggle with, and the price was definitely right at £35/person. Don’t hesitate to check them out to see for yourself — you won’t be disappointed!

    My birthday…and chocolate cake

    birthday chocolate cake | seefoodplay.com

This Saturday was my (31st….) birthday, and it was fabutastic. Yes, new word, that’s just how awesome it was. I had a few annoyances throughout and somehow managed to actually cry at one point, but all in all, it was one of my best birthdays yet! All of the credit goes to my husband, though, and he really hit a home run this year. Thanks to him, I have a few new London travel tips for you to check out — well worth it! Also — keep reading for another amazingly easy cake recipe!

Jonathan planned out my day, from start to finish, and I am still impressed by how perfect everything turned out to be. My Type-A self had a hard time not knowing what we were going to be doing at all times, but I quickly let go and am so glad I did.

When Jonathan said we had to be up and out of the flat by 6.30am I thought he was joking (again, this was Saturday…), but when we were up and out by 6.45 (getting out of the house always takes us ages) I knew he meant business with the “Day of Birthday Surprises” 🙂

Our first stop was for breakfast at E Pellicci, a tiny little hole-in-the-wall cafe serving up full English breakfasts (including a vegetarian option). Their cappuccino’s were everything you might possibly need that early on a Saturday morning, and the food was delish. Okay, Jonathan…. I see you.

Next we popped down to Oxford street to wander around a bit and to do some shopping. London is pretty awesome first thing in the morning, before all the tourists are milling about; there’s something really special about a big city like London with no cars or people around. When we travel, we try to make it a point to get up before the sun comes up to go out and explore: it’s a magical sleepy point in the day when everything is just a little bit more beautiful — I highly recommend giving it a try! So I guess we were tourists in London for the morning 🙂

After our Big Adventure visiting London, we headed back East to get some real shopping in: I needed new shoes (I’m using the term “need” quite loosely, here), so off to the mall to pick those out we went. I ended up getting an amaaaazing pair of Nine West black pumps for 75% off (um, hello? I’ll take that deal any day), so that alone made my day a sucess. But it wasn’t over yet…!

We had just enough time to come home to change and get ready for our night on the town, and this is where things got even more special.

Jonathan must have spent countless hours researching (and apparently my love of Tripadvisor rubbed off on him) until he found the perfect spot for dinner: The Sixtyone. Our food was exquisite, from the beginning to the end! We both love our grub, so I don’t take it lightly to say that this is one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant in a long time. We got fish and lamb, and both were cooked to perfection, and even our cocktails were out-of-this-world amazing. Check out the addresses below!

Now onto that cake recipe I promised you. Okay so first of all, I need to confess: I originally wanted to take a bunch of photos during the day to add them to this post, but as usual, I’m terrible at snapping shots so only had one sad little photo of my Birthday Dessert graciously offered to me by the Sixtyone staff:

    birthday chocolate cake | seefoodplay.com

Then I started thinking — I should post a picture of my own cake that I’ve baked (because I’m so good at baking…). I’ve been playing around a bit with my Easiest Chocolate cake recipe for a while, trying different variations, mostly for when I’m in the mood for something fluffier. You guys… trust me when I tell you: this cakey cake recipe is so easy, so fast, and so perfect for a birthday cake celebration for two…! It came out so good I couldn’t believe that I made it, totally from scratch, in less than 30 minutes all together.

Baking isn’t easy for me, so I need my recipes to be fool-proof (times ten). Given that, I’ve kept the quantities as uniform as possible — nothing is worse than when a recipe calls for 1.5 cups of this, 3/4 cups of that, 2 tbps of another thing, sprinkled with 1.5 tsps of that one ingredient you already forgot you needed…! So, here’s my take on the classic chocolate cake — whether you’re a super-star when it comes to baking, or (like me) need to keep it simple — this recipe will not let you down.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 egg
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1/2 cup oil
    • 1/2 cup cocoa
    • 1/2 heaping cup flour
    • 1/2 heaping cup sugar
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder

    Instructions:

    1. Combine the egg, sugar, milk, and oil whisking for about 1 minute
    2. Next, whisk in the flour, sugar, baking powder and cocoa powder
    3. Whisk for another minute or two until everything is nice and smooth
    4. Pour your mixture into a small buttered baking pan (this fills two 5 inch spring form pans, which are what I use)
    5. Bake on 190degrees (celsius) for about 20-25 minutes
    6. Once cooled, finish it off with your favorite icing, and enjoy your teensy weensy perfect-for-couples birthday cake!

*Note: this cake mix fills two of my pans, but would also work quite well in cupcake tins – I think it would fill about 5 cupcake molds.

**Note: I had two molds, so I made the cutest little two-layer cake ever, but you could just serve this as a single layer cake for one person, too!

    Blog launch!

    seefoodplay.com | Blog Launch image

Hello and welcome to my little corner of the web, seeFoodplay.com!

Thanks for stopping by – keep reading to find out why I started this blog, what I plan to publish in terms of content and a few details about me.

So the first thing that people tend to ask me about is the name of the blog, where it comes from and what it means. A few months into working on the blog, I was brainstorming names but couldn’t find anything that matched what I was going for. I got chatting with my colleague Paddy, and halfway jokingly asked him to come up with a name for my blog that would be the perfect mix of what I wanted it all to be about: food (lots of food!), travel, DIY & crafts, all while incorporating my French influence from having lived in Paris for the past 10 years. A few days later, he came up with “seefoodplay” and I loved it pretty much right away! It might not make much sense at first sight, but it combines everything I was looking for, in a cute little French wordplay. When said aloud, “SeeFoodPlay” sounds like “s’il vous plait” which means “please” in French. But it can also mean “Listen up – your attention please!” and it’s even sometimes used in a restaurant when the waiter arrives at your table with your meal. As in, s’il vous plait… if it pleases you to enjoy this amazing French meal that I’ve just served you. The more I thought about the name, the more I realized that it was perfect: this blog is my platform, albeit a small one, to get your attention and to share some of my favorite recipes… if it pleases you 🙂

The see is mostly related to my travels as I go out and see the world with my loving sidekick and devoted husband, Jonathan. The food is dedicated to my (growing) recipe collection, and the play is a reference to my DIY & crafting projects.

As for me, I’m a 30-something originally from Michigan, USA, living and working in London as of February 2015! I spent the previous 10 years in Paris, though, and the city of light definitely still holds a big piece of my heart. But I left with something of hers, too: my adorable Parisian husband, Jonathan. I’m thankful that he continues to put up with the messy kitchens I’ve generated over the years, and supports me in all of my sometimes-crazy always-messy project & recipe ideas.

I fell in love with Europe after my post-High School graduation trip to London and Paris in 2002, and it was pretty clear that my place was on this side of the Atlantic. A study abroad in 2004 in Paris was followed by a permanent move in 2006. After almost ten years in the city of lights (and love), it was time to experience something else: London! After lots of thinking, planning (and more over-thinking), I decided to take advantage of a work opportunity to see what life is like on the other side of The Channel. So, a new adventure begins in London but my heart and home will always be in Paris! These past ten years have allowed me to see and do more than I could have ever hoped for, and I’m really looking forward to this new chapter in my life. From starting my career, to buying an apartment, and most-recently to finding (and marrying!) my one true love (J), I can only say that my 20’s are going to be hard to beat!

So thanks for stopping by to read what I’ve got to say! I’ll be posting about the things I love: food, wine, traveling, cooking, a little bit of fashion, entertaining, home decorating and DIY projects. My “blog research” suggests that this falls into the category of the “Lifestyle blog” but it seems a bit pretentious to suggest that anyone should take lifestyle advice from me…. So, let’s just say this blog is about a bunch of stuff that I like (Food, Travels, DIY…) that hopefully you’ll like, too!

I am committed to updating this blog regularly, and will also answer all questions and emails sent my way! I try to make my posts as clear and typo-free as possible, so if you notice any mistakes, please let me know, but you can also drop me a line just to say “hello!” 🙂
